How to Style Joggers

You may have noticed more and more people stepping out on the town donning what appears to be a sleeker, tapered version of weekend sweats. Jogger pants, commonly referred to as joggers, are exactly that—an elevated sweatpant, versatile enough to be worn post-cycle class or pre-evening out.

If you’re wondering, “what is athleisure,” or “what is loungewear,” joggers are a big part of the answer. And, with the sustainable athleisure fashion trend showing no signs of slowing down1 and the global pandemic continuing to reframe work-from-home edicts, now may be the best time to investigate this comfy, stylish aesthetic.

Dress them up or dress them down, these sweatpant substitutes, like bamboo joggers for women, are a great staple to keep in your closet. In this brief guide, we’ll outline five ways to style joggers, plus what to look for when shopping for your perfect pair.

Five Ways to Style Joggers

You’ve likely glimpsed A-list celebrities and rising TikTok stars stepping out in some effortlessly chic jogger-based outfits, wondering: How can I nail that look? Well, wonder no more, here are five fun, easy ways to style your favorite pair of joggers.

#1 Add Heels, Hair, and a Blazer

If you want your jogger outfit to scream more glam than gym, it’s all about the accessories.

Start with a solid-colored jogger (save the tie-dye for another occasion), then pair it with a tailored blazer and bodysuit. The bodysuit could provide a pop of color, or you can keep everything neutral and polished. Pop on a pair of heels (celebs tend to lean toward strappy, high, and pointed toes).

Finish the look with a set of waves, sleek ponytail, or straight-as-a-board middle part.

#2 Make it Monochrome

Monochrome jogger looks can work for both a casual brunch or a more buttoned down occasion.

A coordinated two-piece outfit featuring a jogger pant with a matching sports bra, tanktop, T-shirt, or cropped hoodie screams, “I’m part of the trend but I’m being laid back about it.” This more casual look may also feature a subtle sports logo (hello Nike swoosh), which gives it a vintage vibe.2

If you want to wear your monochrome jogger into the office, keep it simple. Go for all black, with your blouse hitting right at your hip or perhaps tucked slightly into your jogger. Pair with low heels or loafers.3

#3 Stay True to Your Look

If you have a very specific aesthetic, there’s no need to switch up your routine just because women’s joggers are trending. You can always treat your joggers like any other pair of pants in your closet.

For example, you can pair your smart joggers with a crisp button down and your favorite pair of athleisure sneakers (think Allbirds) just as easily as you would with your beloved pair of vintage Levi’s.

Joggers can work for a more feminine aesthetic, too. Just choose a lighter colored pant, or even linen joggers, and pair it with a delicate top and your favorite charming clutch.4

#4 Get Sporty

Sporty joggers give you carte blanche when it comes to leaning into the full-blown athleisure look.

Keep it all on brand and pair your joggers with a crop top or sports bra from the same clothing company. Then, add a cute track jacket and a pair of chunky sneakers to complete the look.4

#5 Mix and Match

Joggers don’t have to ascribe to a single aesthetic.

Dress your joggers up with a cashmere sweater and your favorite designer oversized bag, then tone them down a bit in the same outfit with your perfectly worn-in Doc Martens. Or, keep it extra comfy by pairing your joggers with an oversized men’s bamboo shirt. Perfect for going out lounging around the house, there are so many ways to mix and match your favorite pair of joggers.

What to Look for in a Jogger

Now that you have a better grasp on how to style your joggers, you’ll want to be sure you find the right foundation for this outfit idea. That means choosing the right fit and being picky about what materials your joggers are made with.

Choose the Right Fit

Joggers are typically more slim-fitting than your average sweatpant, tapering at the ankle and showing your skin, sock, or shoe. Joggers will also often be high-rise, with a drawstring tightening right around your belly button.

If your joggers are too tight, you’ll likely feel uncomfortable, totally defeating the purpose of the jogger: to feel great no matter where you are or what you’re doing. If your jogger is too loose, that’s actually OK—that may be the way you like your clothes to fit. Just pair with a form fitting top to balance out the look.

Be Picky About Your Material

If you plan to incorporate your joggers into a variety of different looks, you’ll want to invest in a pair that is both well-made and comfortable.

At Boody Eco Wear, our affordable, luxe Weekend joggers are made using a breathable blend of bamboo clothing viscose and organic cotton. With a ribbed waistband and soft, elastic waist, these are the perfect pair of trousers for brunching, working from home, or exercising.5 They’re also a great pair of bottoms to slip into if you’re wondering how to relax before bed
